well I'm a directv tech a dvr must have two cable lines in the back of you dvr turn the box around look the inputs were it say sat in 1 and sat in 2 you should have two cable lines you probably missing sat in 2 the second line give a second tuner so you can record one show and the second tuner let you watch another call directv and tell them to send a tech to run a second cable line to you dvr good luck

First off how long have you had this DVR? What kind of DVR isit? Are you positive it has Dual Tuners? (If it had recorded 1 show and watched another channel previously then it is a dual Tuner).

So if it is a Dual Tuner and you hav e tow cables coming from the satellite dish/ or Cable company then you need to check that you are still getiing signals on BOTH lines. If one line is disconnected or not receiving a signal then it will not let you record and watch another channel at the same time. If you are not getting both signals then you may need to contact the Dish Company (DirecTV or Dish) and have them come out and adjust the dish. If it is caqble then you may need to contact them to check your transmission lines from them.

If these do not work it is always possible that ONE of the Tuners is not working any longer, or if it is cable and you are trying to watch TWO shows that are Digital Channels this can also be an issue. Some DVRs can either record TWO analog channels at the same time, or ONE analog and ONE digital channel at the same time, but NOT TWO Digital Channels. Just trying to give you some possible issues here.

If you want more info or want to expand on this with more info from my previous questions I could help dig into the issue more. Hope this helps.

You can record and view a show at the same time ONLY IF the DVR has TWO tuners.

If you use satellite, you need a dual-tuner DVR/set-top.

If you use off-the-air or cable and your TV can decode the same channels, pass the TV signal to BOTH the DVR and the TV. When you record channel A on the DVR, use the TV tuner to watch channel B.

I have a Dish Network DVR, I dont know if its the same thing you have.
If you have 2 tv's hooked up to the same dvr,
you have a choice to record the show on TV 1 or TV 2. Choose the TV that you are not using and it will record there, and it will let you wacth whatever you want on the other TV.

Example: there is a TV in you room and another one on the living room. Record the show on the tv thats in your room, and you could watch the other show in the living room. Thats what I always do.

Hope it helps :)

You may need to use a button called "swap" or something similar that will switch the DVR to its other tuner so that you can change the channel while the other tuner records.
