AOL and Compuserv were sort of the first ISPs for the public. Although it wasn't the Internet as we know it today. More like a commercial online service. I had a Compuserv account back as far as 1989.

AOL bought Compuserv at some point in the 1990s. AOL is training wheels for the Internet.

I think it has been a pretty long time since they were on top. I did business with them for a little while and there service was lousy. They managed to get away with poor service for a while but there are too many better options now.

You could trace it back to the old "Quantum Link" days back in the 80's (though not technically the Internet as we know it today)
