The answer will depend a lot on what state and county you live in. Usually, a will has to be filed with probate court. Try checking the website for the court in the county where your friend died for information about accessing probate records. If the will was never filed with probate, that's probably a breach of the executors' duties, although again, the law in your state could be different.

You can also simply try requesting a copy from the executors. If they resist, that will give you an inkling that something fishy is going on. If you can't find a copy, and the executors won't give it to you, it might be worth getting a lawyer involved.

Check with the county. The executor typically has ten business days to file a copy.

Get a copy of the will from the probate court, or from the executor, if you know who that is.

The earliest is when you attend the reading of the will after the person died. Until that time they can change their minds (and their wills) a million times. They can even lie to you about what is in their will.
