This is what you would need to buy and how to set it up.

-Wireless Router (Many to choose from, but I like to use D-Links)
-Wireless USB adapter (Again I like to use D-Link)

Now for the connections:
-Cable from wall to Broadband Modem
-Using Ethernet Cable connect from the Broadband Modem to the Wireless routers WAN (Internet Port)
-Using Ethernet Cable connect from the wireless routers ethernet port #1 to your downstairs computers ethernet port.

-Install the Wireless USB adapter in the upstairs computer

Thats it.......

Assuming the wireless router has a built-in switch (almost all of them do), this should be fairly simple.

First, you would have to connect the wireless router to the cable modem. This is typically a matter of taking the Cat5 cable that is currently running from the (downstairs) computer and running it between the modem and the WAN port on the wireless router. This will usually just require a standard Cat5 cable

Second, the wireless router must be configured to use the cable data service. This may be very simple but some set ups will require a username and password. You should know this from when the PC was initially set up to use the cable data service. If you don't, you should be able to call their tech support and ask.

Third, the wireless router must be configured for a wireless network. There are a lot of options in doing this but the easiest way to get the set up working is to set up the network without encryption and make sure the upstairs PC can connect to the router and get an IP address. DO NOT leave the wireless network without encryption. You will want to set up encryption after verifying the router-to-(upstairs)PC connectivity. I only mention this because encryption can be a hurdle for testing the connection. Chances are there is a wizard for setting up the wireless connection.

Four, set up encryption on the wireless router and upstairs PC and verify the connection again.

Everything here should be outlined in the manual for the router.

As far as items, you would need the wireless router and manual, data cable to connect the router to the cable modem, data cable to connect the downstairs PC to the router, and a wireless adapter for the upstairs PC.

I am adding a link from Microsoft which goes over how to do the Windows setup for a wireless network.

using any stressed out modem/routers might want to paintings with none mission, because once you position in it and connect the computer your internet connection should be up to boot. It`s like having a stressed out connection from an internet providing organisation. The modem/router you receives would have a LAN port and your computing gadget has one aswell. once the modem/router is configured for internet get entry to easily plug the cable between the modem and computing gadget and briefly time you'd be getting access to the web.
