Read the webpage and if you like what you read this is the antivirus of choice I have used for over ten years and never one virus.
By culture the Chinese are very secret just about everything and that includes their software.
I have used for years an antivirus program out of Beijing, China that is also used by the Government of China.
This antivirus program does not have the Govt. permission to be rated with all other know antivirus programs.
What I can assure you is that you pay only a one time fee for life of $29.99, that will include all auto updates, and all new versions for life. The Chinese don't believe in having to pay an annual fee for updates or new versions.
I can tell you their technology is light years ahead of any other known antivirus software out there.
If you open a webpage and there is a hidden virus it will clean in realtime. Anything that you download and has even a trace code, it will kill the download and ask you to upload the trace code for investigation. In real time the upload will tell you if it is clean or not.
Will not allow you download, Real Player, because there is a hidden file that is a trojan keylogger. The file was uploaded and traced back to the United States Army, Intelligence Services out of London, England. (Removal of the file Real Player will reject the installation).
Read for yourself at their webpage. I have never had one virus in ten plus years. Plus it will catch any progam with it's dynamic defense system, for software that you download and it does not have a publisher or lic., included.
Twister Trojan Antivirus V7

Grisoft offers AVG Free.
What you describe is not a virus however. The viruses, worms and trojans do not announce themselves, they want to take over your computer for their own purposes.
Popups can be disabled in most browsers. The better ones for this are Firefox and Opera, both free. One thing that does help is to deactivate the interal Messenger Service. This is NOT the Windows Messenger that is used to chat with others. This is intended for System Managers to be able to send messages to all users on a network. For some reason, Microsoft has the default to on even on XP Home.

1 solution is try mozilla firefox browser (a software no.1 for the last year), add in the plug-in the NoScript. It would help u a lot to solve the problem.
2 solution is to upgrade ur Internet Explorer browser (get it from Microsoft website - it is completely free), in the last version. The feature of blocking pop-up windows is much better implemented & it should help u very much.
I don't think that any antivirus would do a trick against pop-up windows.

It would have been very helpful to know what the popups say or what sites they direct you to.
If you keep getting popups on your computer you have an adware program. This is usually downloaded by a Trojan that must be removed.
Use this program and procedure to scan your computer.
This procedure works for all Malware. You can use any AntiVirus or AntiSpy program you have download on your computer.
Download and update ewido. Do not run:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
TEMPORARILY SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
3. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click "Show hidden files and folders", and clear(uncheck) the "Hide protected operating system files" check box.
IMPORTANT: Files are hidden by Windows for a very good reason. It is not wise to experiment with these files. Unfortunately, to successfully remove modern spyware we must turn this protection off temporarily. Please turn the protection back on when you have finished cleaning your system.
EMPTY INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER CACHE:
1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button. Select the Delete all offline content check box in the confirmation dialogue box that appears, click OK. Click OK again.
RESTART IN SAFE MODE:
To do this you need to hold down or repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer is booting (when the computer is displaying a black screen with white text). When the boot menu appears, use your keyboard arrows to select "Safe Mode."
Safe Mode can look quite ugly. The color may look bad, and all of your desktop icons will be very large. This is normal.
START THE SCAN WITH YOUR PROGRAM(S).
When the scan and removal are completed REBOOT COMPUTER. This will restart you in normal mode.
RESET HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
The RESTORE POINTS may be infected with the Malware and cannot be used. Delete the old one(s) and make a new one.
CLEAR OLD RESTORE POINT(S). HERE'S HOW:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click on the System Restore tab.
3. Select the Turn Off System Restore check box, click Apply, then restart your computer.
4. Return to the System Restore Tab and turn System Restore back on.
TO SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Point to Programs, then navigate to Accessories, then System Tools, then click System Restore.
3. Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.
4. In the Restore point description box, type a name for your restore point, and then click Next.
5. Click OK.
NOTE: If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and are unable to access the Internet after removing Malware, there is a command that may fix the problem. It works by resetting the winsock catalogue. Click on Start, then Run and type CMD in the box. Click OK. Type "netsh winsock reset" (no quotes)into the DOS window that appears.
IF EWIDO DIDN'T REMOVE IT YOU MAY HAVE A SMITFRAUD TROJAN: Go to either of these sites for Smitfraud removal:
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
Another type of Trojan that requires a specialized removal program is Vundo Trojans.
The program should fix Vundo-based Winfixer(WinAntiSpyware, WinAntiVirus, Blackworm, Amaena)problems.
