I know how to tune drums sorta, but not how to get a specific sound. How should I tune my toms/bass drum to get a low thuddy noise without rippling - like in the song Prisoner by Iron Maiden, if you've heard that.

First you are not going to get that sound with stock heads. You can get close by first tuning the batter so they do not ring out but have a deeper sound then you want to tune the resonant head on the bottom if you want that thud tune it loose. It is hard to explain in text but to find a specific sound you are going to have to experiment with how tight or loose you want the heads. If you are going to tune your drums alot i would recommend getting a drum dial. I have one and i can tune my drums fast. Also if you play alot of music with thuddy drums i would recommend getting hydraulic heads, they are two ply heads with a liquid in the middle and they give a really good thud.

loosen the right flippantly, initiate bringing it in to song one lug at a time in a star vogue, tap one lug at a time, about one inch from the fringe of the drum. you'll commence to take heed to a tone that you want to sound flippantly, attempt this for the bottom head as well, initiate with the kick drum and paintings you way backwards from the biggest drum to the smallest... then the snare... good fulfillment!
