In my opinion, Tobey Maguire makes an awesome Peter Parker.
And a terrible Spiderman.

They wanted to cast someone who was kinda on the nerdie side. The whole idea of the story is that a nerdie guy can turn into something amazing like superman. As far as acting goes, I agree with you. He is not the best actor.
How about Johnny Depp? I think he would have been great, and he is an amazing actor. They would of had to kinda mess him up a bit too make him look dorkey though. He is just too dang good looking!

Jake Gyllenhaal was up for the part of Spiderman in the sequels because Tobey was injured shooting Seabiscuit. Tobey was able to recover in time to return to the suit.

They had to pick someone who could portray a somewhat nerdy Peter Parker, but could also handle being physical in order to portray Spiderman himself. Spiderman has never been a huge muscular guy like Superman. Toby has done a GREAT job so far

For the role of Peter Parker, the studio expressed interest in actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Freddie Prinze Jr.[4] In addition, actors Scott Speedman, Jay Rodan, and James Franco were involved in screen tests for the lead role.[18] In July 2000, Tobey Maguire was cast as Parker. Maguire was Raimi's primary choice after he saw The Cider House Rules,[3] but the studio was initially hesitant to cast someone who did not seem to fit the ranks of "adrenaline-pumping, tail-kicking titans". Maguire, who wore a webbed vestment for the screen test, impressed studio executives with his recently aerobicized physique. The actor was signed for a deal in the range of $3 to $4 million with higher salary options for two sequels.[19] Maguire personally identified with the character, saying that he had a lonely childhood as, "I went to a lot of schools along the coast in California, made few friends and stayed with aunts, uncles and grandparents while my folks tried to make ends meet."[20] To prepare, Maguire was trained by a physical trainer, a yoga instructor, a martial arts expert and a climbing expert, taking several months to improve his physique.[15] Maguire studied spiders and worked with a wire man to simulate the arachnidlike motion, and had a special diet.[21]
Before Raimi cast Kirsten Dunst in the role of Peter Parker's love interest Mary Jane Watson, he had expressed his interest in casting Alicia Witt.[22] Dunst decided to audition after learning Maguire had been cast, feeling the film would have a more independent feel.[23] The role of Norman Osborn, also known as the villain Green Goblin, drew the interest of actor Nicolas Cage, who spoke to the filmmakers about being cast, despite having a busy schedule.[24] The studio had offered actor John Malkovich the role,[25] but Malkovich turned down the offer, saying that Spider-Man was not his genre and also cited scheduling difficulties for the role.[26] Ultimately, Willem Dafoe was cast as Norman Osborn in November 2000.[27] The role of Norman's son, Harry Osborn, was filled by James Franco, who had originally screen tested for Spider-Man

Because he fits the part of a small nerdy guy.... unlike Jake G, who is too much of a hunk to be Spidey. Also, even though he is 30, he still looks like he's in his early 20's.

I think they chose him because he has that innocent look to him. And Peter Parker is supposed to be more innocent and dorky. I honestly think that he is pretty good in the Spiderman movies.

Jake Glyenhall was going to get the part, but Toby Mcquire got it instead. I think Jake should have gotten it, after how good he played in Jarhead.
