how can i check my GPU running temp? i have a G-Force FX 5500 on a Dell dimension 4600 comp. (about 3 year old system)

Try Ntune.

If no temp readings are indicated, either there is no sensor or the card manufacturer did not activate the sensor. For the latter, I've not seen a workaround. The workaround for the 6600GT is somewhat complicated:

The other option is costly. You will have to buy a temp monitor w/ a probe and it only monitors outside case temp, not core temp.

CPU.

there are hardware monitering progs you can install or do a warm re-boot and go into your BIOS. F1 or F2 or Delete key...look for something like 'press ?? for setup' during POST.
There is usually a hardware monitor in there for basic things like CPU temp and fan speed, etc...
