My air conditioning works and stays on whenever I get under the hood and hit the compressor clutch by hand. I've done this on several occassions and it always works. But when turn on the a/c inside my car from the unit...as if I was driving somewhere (with the hood down), my a/c doesn't come on.
My a/c switch and fan slide knobs work fine...but the a/c just doesn't engage whenever I flip it on. If I were to turn on the heat that would work fine. So is this just a wiring problem or what?

Your problem is a weak clutch coil. It could be caused by an electrical wiring connection problem that isn't allowing full current to the coil or it could be the clutch coil going bad, although they usually just quit working all at once. The air gap on the clutch could also be too wide. Try disconnecting the clutch wiring connector and see if you can run a jumper wire straight from the battery to one terminal of the clutch coil. You will also need to run a ground to the other terminal. If the clutch engages this way, most likely the problem is in the wiring. If the a/c cools ok when it is running, then the problem is strictly in the clutch. It clutch assembly can be replaced seperate from the a/c compressor and is a simple job but requires special pullers and installers.
PS...using your hand to bump the clutch is a bit dangerous. Try using a screwdriver handle or something.

Ronb has it right, definetly a weak field coil. Make sure it has a full 12 volts to the connector. If so, replace the coil, and make sure the air gap is .030 between pully and clutch hub.

certainly, i might think of a few thing is basically burnt out. Like between the others had stated, undesirable a/c, alternator, waterpump, etc. something with a pully and spins from the belt would desire to squeal if some thing is undesirable interior it. You stated it generally starts off once you turn on your A/C? i might seem into checking that first. it fairly is very probable the reason it squeals. Its constantly going to be spinning so it is not proper if your headlights or some thing is on. it is going to constantly squeal, i might probable get worst once you turn on the A/C. examine that out and see if thats it. If it gets worse, or starts off once you turn the A/C on, opportunities have it that its your A/C compresser. wish this facilitates. good luck, i be conscious of how complicated which would be, quite while the "experts" do no longer fix it the 1st time.

your compressor needs a shot of compressor oil. This is an internal oil that is charged through your inlet ports for a/c.You can pick a can of charged a/c oil at autozone for around eight bucks. If you dont have a hose then buy a can of charging oil with coolant mix that has a hose already. These are around fifteen dollars

Could be the clutch going out, or there may be something else holding it out. Like the low pressure switch, which would mean it is low on freon. good luck
