a card reader lets you pop in digital memory cards such as sd, mmc, xd, compact flast, ms pro, into your computer and open them up via my computer. these cards are found in digital cameras mobile phones and other sorts of equipment. handy if you have any of these items.

It enables you to transfer pictures from digital cameras that save to memory cards.

Also a cheap and cheerful 'sneakernet' device. (Networking without network devices). Holds far more than a floppy disk too.

Some Laptops have specialist chip&pin card readers (as a security device) = however that is less common ....

It for memory cards...Phone,digi cam etc... so you can transfer data from the card to you laptop.
