This is a poll for women, but men are welcome to respond.
To avoid the need for a draft, our armed forces need to recruit more volunteers to serve. If you were assured of a job in language translation or codebreaking, would you join the armed forces?

Whoa, Anastasia....you're making a lot of assumptions there... it's just a poll soliciting opinions.

does it really matter if you are female or male if you want to serve your country? i am a military wife and know many women who have served in the army, while they are not technically infantry they are in mortal danger while in combat areas. i have no problem with women in the military if the person male or female joins for the right reason, i only worry when we have people of either sex who joins for the wrong reason, people like that do more harm than good

There lies the problem. The army has no problem finding geeks for codebreaking. It is for the dirty stuff the army is short manned. They are circumventing it by hiering soldiers of fortune. Besides in Iraq the casualities are about evenly split i think. Soldiers in combat positions might even have a lower risk of getting hurt or killed due to the fact that they have the initiative (and a gunship in their back).

I'd never get accepted into the military-you have to take orders, and I don't respect many people in authority; plus I'm almost 50, a bit old, even for the military these days. Also, they still have that "don't ask, don't tell" crud, and I'm bi. I wouldn't be quiet about it, since that's their problem if they're homophobic, not mine. I also think the majority of the wars that have been fought have been idiotic. I like what many European countries do; they require all young people (male and female) to either do a year of military service or something like the peace corps for a year, if you are a conscientious objector. I'd be more than willing to spend a year doing something like the peace corps; but not something supporting a senseless war.

Hmmm . . . well, I've always been good with words, so I guess I could do something like that. I would also be OK with a job in mapping. But I doubt I'd ever want to join the Armed Forces.

Combat or not the draft has not been proposed by any one but the Dem. leadership. Any type of job that didn't include getting shot at again would be nice.

Just to be clear: women can't serve in a combat position anyway.
Why should we be given "less dangerous" jobs because we are women? I think any SOLDIER should be allowed to enter any job for which they are qualified.
Furthermore, if you think that a job in the military intelligence field is going to insulate you from harm you are sadly mistaken. All soldiers are infantry first and foremost. That is what basic training trains troops for: combat.
You should quit being a sexist.

I would join up in a second. It would be the 7th generation military for my family. My great aunt drove an ambulance during the First World War. However I would abhor being yelled awake because I am just not a morning person.

I'd rather be in combat (tank driver or pilot) or a behind-the-line strategist. Language translation or codebreaking isn't really exciting to me. I need action or something fun.
I'd rather not be infantry though. They die too fast in a war because of bombers and vehicles.

Well just to be clear with you. Women aren't allowed to fight in direct combat, unless she was attacked while in war of course, women do have to do that.
