My cousin married a white girl. They had alot of problems and their marriage didn't last long. He regrets marrying her and said, "Asians should stick with Asians, Blacks with Blacks, and Whites with Whites, Hispanics with Hispanics." How can a couple overcome cultural differences? Is it possible to have a happy relationship despite the barriers?

My sister has been married to an African American man for 18 years she is white.. They have 3 boys.. They have dealt with a few cultural issues.. They overcame them through communication and compromise..

As long as a couple is willing to communicate and compromise any relationship can work no matter the cultural differences..

For my sister and her husband the biggest issue was Christmas vs Kwanzaa (not sure that's how it's spelled)... He wanted to celebrate Kwanzaa and she wanted to celebrate Christmas... Thier compromise was to take elements of both and intermingle them to create a holiday they call "Kwanzmas" they decorate with elements of each and have taught thier boys the stories of both holidays..

Like any marriage between any two people without communication and compromise it doesn't work...

DIfferent races have been doing this for a long time.

Decades ago, social prejudice made life difficult for mixed marriages. Couples had to fight external prejudice with heroics. These days, such social prejudice still exists, particularly in certain states.

But you are talking about cultural compatibility and internal prejudice where the individuals cannot get along with their spouses. There are no heroics, just self-centerness and the maturity of the individuals.

Why can't divorced people just take the responsibility for screwing up their own marriage instead for blame some outside force.

Marriage end because of the people in the marriage and not because of race. I'm 100 percent Mexican and all my family married someone of a different race (black, asian, white, Philipino) and only of my sisters are divorced and she is divorced multiple times. So do you think its the racial differences or my sister that cause her own divorces?

I am white and married to a Puerto Rican. Going on 11 years. We have had a wonderful marriage until recently and are splitting up due to other reasons, nothing to do with race, culture, etc. Interacial marriages can work, it depends on the individuals.

My Mum is black and my Dad is white... and we are from the South....but 3 kids later, and 20 some odd years under their belt...there is still love.

No, lie it is hard sometimes....some people are just ignorant. But I have to say, I love being biracial, and I love how my parents love isn't effected by other people's view of it.

Some relationships work and others don't....but if they don't work out its not because of their skin color....

The best way to overcome cultural differences...is to remember different is good. She doesn't have to be you and you don't have to be her...and experiencing her culture and her yours is just another part of your lives to share together. It may take getting use to at times, but that doesn't mean you stop loving or communicating with the one you love.

Good luck!

OMG!! What a crushing thing for her to say about the baby!!!

There is only ONE race - the human race. Anything else is purely artificial - man made - and therefore not worthy of attention.

When you LOVE someone, the colour of their skin doesn't matter any more than the longitude at which you are living.

And don't give a rat's @#$ about what other's think. At one point the entire world thought the world was flat - goes to show what mutual concensus is really worth, eh!

The problem with your cousin and his exwife was deeper than racial. If you truely love someone, you love all of them. You have to love the good (easy) and bad (harder). Here's a secret to the perfect relationship ... and this crosses all racial barriers..... if YOUR goal in life is to make your partner 100% happy, and everything you do, and say, and think is to do this, and your PARTNER does the exact same things, your relationship will be perfect. Think about it.... you both have someone out there whose goal it is in life is to make you as happy as you possibly can! Racial issues are just issues, like not liking your inlaws is just an issue.

It is very possible. You just have to be prepared to fight for your relationship and not let anyone on the outside try to tear you apart. A strong relationship can withstand anything. In a relationship, skin color isn't what makes relationships work, it is the way that you feel about the real person. Good Luck!

Of course, I think it's up to the person to break the cycle...Reguardless, of our race, religion, or culture we are still either man or woman....Theres always going to be barriers and differences in a relationship but, it's how we deal with the them that counts...

It will not matter as long as it is TRUE love, i.e. both are committed to the relationship and understand and respect each other differences. When one cannot tolerate the differences of the other and tries to impose different believes things will fall apart
