What do they eat? Acorns?

You might be referring to a Woodpecker in Northern California called the Downey Woodpecker. I personally have never heard of an Acorn Woodpecker.
Anyhow I answered because I found, or discovered that the Downey Woodpecker eats acorns from the scrub oaks that grow in N. CA . They not only eat them they store them for winter food.
They go to a tall digger pine tree and peck holes in the tree , go back get an acorn bring it to the tree and turn it sharp point first and use there beak to tap it into the hole. leaving just enough of it exposed so they can grab it to pull it out when they need to.

Yes, they eat acorns in the winter, but in the summer they eat a variety of foods.
