That depends... is it a brown bear or a black bear? Because the answer is totally different.

Black bear
First try back away slowly talking calmly to it. Do not run. This failing, make yourself seem as big as possible, hold your coat out, stand tall, and yell and scream. If it attacks fight back as hard as you can. Poke it in the eyes, hit it on the nose, whatever. Just don't back down. Don't bother trying to run or climb a tree. Black bears can climb and run faster. You want to scare it away. To avoid a confrontation make lots of noise in the bush to scare them away.

Brown bear or grizzly
Back away slowly, and if it makes a move get up a tree if you can. Otherwise play dead. This is not fool proof as sometimes a mother bear will still attack but as you can not outrun a bear this is your best chance. Grizzlies do not eat carrion and will sniff you then leave you alone. Only if it attacks at this point should you even consider fighting back. Odds are if you try fight you'll lose, so avoid this at all cost. This is only a last resort. As with black bears if you end up having to fight fight as hard as you can.

In general bears are shy and will avoid humans, though black bears may be attracted by garbage in camp, so make sure to properly seal your food and garbage away.

Hope this helps you.

If you see a bear, but it seems to be ignoring and you're pretty far away, slowly back away. Don't look into its eyes, but don't turn around. If you don't feel as if that would be a good move (it's seen you and looks clearly interested), lie flat on your stomach with your arms and legs spread out. This tactic is to try and keep it from flipping you over and protects you vital organs. If it DOES find you with your belly side exposed, try to curl up into a tight ball.

I've heard of many experiences with bears, and these are the main things rangers tell people. An older couple was once out though, and they tried this. The wife was in shock as it wasn't working and the bear was tearing the sinues from her husbands arm. She then took her binoculars and smacked the bear on the nose as hard as she could. It went away.
This may work if you're really in a bad spot, but you don't want to provoke the bear if it seems like it's not going to do anything. Especially if there are cubs.

Usually, a bear will not attack you and is just interested in being alone. If you talk and make noise while you're walking, the bear will probably be gone before you've even seen it.

PREDATORY BEAR-if the bear approaches in a nondefensive unconcerned manner speak to it in a loud firm voice and try to get out of the bears dirrection but DO NOT RUN, if it follows then stop again and make a stand, shout at it and stare at it, make yourself appear larger- step up on a rock or move uphill

DEFENSIVE BEAR- will appear stressed and usure of how to act pacing about and popping its jaws
talk to it in a very calm voice, DO NOT THROW ANYTHING!, when its not moving toware you move away from it slowly and carefully, do not stumble or it might charge you, if the bear continues to approach you then stop and continue talking calmly, if it charges use a spray, pepperspray or w/e you have or a gun

if youre bored then instead of commiting suicide go live life to the fullest. Ive never heard someone say hmm im bored im gonna pst the time trying to kill myself. Go ask every girl out whos hot. who cares if she says no. itd be the same if you were dead, A guy named richard Swanson just died. He sold his house and had nothing but a ball and a dream to dribble said ball to brazil in time for the world cup. Yesterday, 14 days into his journey, he was hit by a car and killed. I think thats really sad on one hand but on the other he was doing what he wanted and he died that way. take that how yo please

Carry snacks, and drop them on your escape.
I would do a study on bears and interaction, so you know what behaviors you need to promote a safest encounter. I think I remember things Like don't run. Dont wear perfume, dont be in the wild when your menstrating. Knowledge can save your life.

If you see a bear, don't panic, they're not going to attack you for sure! Just keep your distance and slowly wander off.

Stay in open ground so you don't come across one suddenly and startle it. Bears usually only attack people if they're scared - don't scream, don't move suddenly. Just be quiet and slowly leave.

well usually bears don't attack humans but stya still dont move. Because bears can run up to 20 MPH!!!!!.....but bears cannot run down steep hills so you could get away if your near a steep hill but really your not safe because bears can go anywhere!!!

They have "bear sprays" on the market
called "one pounders" that are supposed
to stop a bear.
Frankly, I prefer my 30-30.

I've always heard you are supposed to "play dead" and whatever you do, don't run from them. That's a serious answer:)
