Ok well what numbers go into 476?

HERE ARE YOUR PERFECT SQUARES
4 = 2 x 2
9 = 3 x 3
16 = 4 x 4
25 = 5 x 5
36 = 6 x 6
49 = 7 x 7
64 = 8 x 8
81 = 9 x 9
100 = 10 x 10

The square root you choose is 4 because its the biggest square root that divides into 476 without a decimal.

If you still don't get it, this is how you do it more detailed.

476 divided by 4 = 119
476 divided by 9= 52.8 repeating
476 divided by 16 = 29.75
476 divided by 25 = 19.04
476 divided by 36 = 13.2 repeating
476 divided by 49 = 9.72(rounded to the nearest 10th)
476 divided by 64 = 7.4375
476 divided by 81=5.9(round to the nearest 10th)

You choose 4 because 476 divided by 4 gives you a whole #.
All the other square roots don't except 2 but you want the biggest square root and that is 4.

The way you write it is 4 root 119.

If your wondering why not 119 root 4, Its because the square root of 4 is 2 which is also a square root.

119 4
/ \ / \
doesn't break down. root2 root2

root2xroot2 = 2

(a root times a root cancels out the root.)

This means 4 is a whole number but 119 is a root so it is written:

4 root 119

2(119^0.5)

Try to find the factors that you can take the square root of.

In this case it was 4, 4x119 = 476
