You can not play WoW for free. You have the pay the monthly $13+ fee.
No computer game really hurts a computer. If your machine has been over-clocked, then maybe you could overheat something, but with over-clocking your screen saver could cause a meltdown.
WoW is more self contained than other games, since it is cross-platform, so it is even better than most at stay out of other Windows or Mac files.

You can play 10 days for free with trial software, but then it's about $15 per month. Since I play WoW quite a bit, this is a good investment, I definitely get my $15 a month out of it - a bargain in my opinion. I suppose it does take a lot of hard drive space, but i've noticed no computer problems. Since most of the game information is housed on Blizzard's many servers, this isn't really an issue for most people. I have a cable modem, but have friends who use dial up or DSL, and they don't have much trouble connecting and staying connected unless there is extremely bad weather.

WoW is $15 a month. And it won't hurt your computer. Just takes up a lot of space on the hard drive.

You have to pay for your account last I knew, never had any issues with it hurting my computer though, had a few issues with people hacking accounts and such.. but they have pretty good response for that sort of thing, I quit playing because it got boring to me.. so if you are looking to try it out then go ahead, you may like it more then I did.
