This is a serious question so serious answers please! I read in a book that people are hired to put on mermaid costumes and swim around in a really huge tank. Is this true? I think there are jobs like this down in Florida, how does one get a job to be a mermaid like that? I'm really curious.

Yes, in Weeki Wachee Springs, FL. There's actually a Mermaid Reunion scheduled this year. To get a job as a mermaid, you would need to be quite athletic, preferably have had some training as a singer (breathing technique is quite important) and have a terrific sense of balance. There are camps for children to train as mermaids but they do not do the actual water performance. A mermaid must have scuba certification, know first aid and CPR, and learn to use the air hose properly (including how to find it) because taking in water is not a good idea. The spring is not always warm so be warned. The pay is good, the benefits decent, and it's fun to list the occupation on applications.
Weeki Wachee is always open to new employees but keep in mind if there is any difficulty in getting along with others, the applicant will not be hired. Each mermaid depends on the others for safety and bickering will not be tolerated.

I saw that on the "Today" show years ago. It is in a bar or restaurant or something like that in Florida and the ladies have little air tubes they grab and take a sip of oxygen from when they need to. What an unusual job!

ok this is a serious answer, my friend 's husband had a job as a merman in a sea world style exhibit, he played the part of the merman in a kind of kids pantomime. he had a costume and everything. We used to rib his partner something rotton about it, asking questions such as..... well im sure you can imagine. He is also a marine biologist and also looked after the specis in the tanks in the exhibit.

there are some bars and restaurants in Fl that use girls in mermaid costumes in big tanks with plate glass for everyone to watch them....they have oxygen tubes and fill up with air and swim around for your entertainment.....good luck

This is probably true. They dress as mermaids to impres kids or something, and everyone knows kids love mermaids and all other fairy tail characters:)

Yeah. It was on the "SIMPLE LIFE' a few years ago.. I dont know about FL tho..
