Metal objects in post?

I live in the U.K. I would like to know if it is allowed to post metal objects such as keys by post (Royal Mail).

If you can't, things are really strange over there. Hotels commonly used to have "Drop in the Mailbox" tags to return keys. Coins are metal, why would they be banned?
