If interstates are highways that connect one state to another, why do they have them in hawaii??

These highways were actually built as the "National Defense and Interstate Highway System". Most of the four lane, limited access highways built using federal funds from the "Federal Aid Highway Act", including those on Hawaii, acquired the shortened name of "Interstate Highway".

These roads came about because President Eisenhower, while serving as a General during World War 2, was amazed by how quickly, and efficiently the German army could move about by using the German Autobahn system.

Because Interstate Highways are paid for with Federal money, and Hawaii wanted to get it's share of these funds for it's roadway infrastructure.
