The printer model is a HP Deskjet 5740. It seems like people so far are saying that if its a non-expensive model and I don't have a warranty, I'd be better off buying a new one. How much are HP Deskjet 5740s anyway?

Unless you are talking about an expensive HP printer, you are better off replacing it with a new model. Common household printers are often less than $100 (USD) and can often be purchased for closer to $70 (USD). The cost of a technicians time plus the parts is going to quickly exceed the price of a new printer. If the printer is under warranty, check with HP and they should be able to provide you with information for repair/replacement. I actually did this with an Epson printer once when it was out of warranty and Epson still provided coverage. I had only tried to find out if there was any user serviceable parts on printer as it just stopped printing, even with replacement cartridges. I haven't had to deal with HP on a failed printer yet (hoping my current HP Deskjet 5540 holds up several years).

Printers are so inexpensive that if it is not something that you can readily repair yourself through the diagnostics, and it is no longer in warranty, you are better off just buying a new one.
