We are moving across the country, literally; and we have 2 cars. Can we put one car (we'd pump the gas out of the tank) into the moving truck with items piled around and on top of it and then tow the other car? That way we can avoid wear-and-tear on the cars by driving them such long distances. Is that even legal? Has anyone done this? We're trying to keep costs down, trying to avoid using auto movers or car shipping companies.

The car might fit, but you would have a hard time getting out of it. And, it would seriously overload the moving van. It is best to drive on and tow the other. Be sure to take proper caution with the towed vehicle or you could damage it. Best to check with the rental agency about the proper way to tow.

You should talk to the moving company, but I would say no. You can, however rent a double car towing mechanism. Ask your truck rental company about it.

you should check with the moving van company on this. It would also depend on the size of truck you rent I think most trucks are not long enough to fit a car in.

just taking the gas out isn't good enough you could have an explosion because of high temps in side truck from left over vapors i wouild not recommend it ask a state trooper to find out if legal dont risk your families safety to save a couple hundred bucks maybe you could sell one car then replace it when you get to your destination. good luck i just moved to tennesee from michigan last week

Coupe. I don't have kids. It's just me and my wife. I don't need a 4 door car. Coupes also look better. Also I save a lot of gas because when I hang out with friends, they don't want me to drive because they don't want to sit in the back seat. My friends with the 4 door cars always drive.

Probably would be best to ask the moving truck company from which you rented.

you can get a service where they will ship your car via the trucks that haul all the new cars.

the only this would work is if you have a VERY small sedan, not a full sized sedan.

Tow the car behind the van. I would not place it inside due to the lack of securing devices.
