We're still in the 'war' because the Bush administration WANTS us in the 'war'! There are only three really 'lame' reasons why we unconstitutionally and illegally attacked Iraq:
1) The Bush family had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein ever since the days of Desert Storm when George H.W. Bush was ridiculed, criticized and humiliated for not 'finishing the job' and ousting Hussein at that time;
2) Dick Cheney and all his oil buddies want all that OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands to they can get richer and richer and richer feeding America's dependence on cheap, easily-accessible foreign OIL;
3) After World War II, the giant U.S. military-industrial complex realized how profitable 'war' could be. So they bought up all the politicians, hired pricey lobbyists, and formed special interest groups to encourage and promote 'war'. Thus, the U.S. was involved in the Korean Conflict; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Cold War; Vietnam; and Desert Storm, all so companies could make billions of dollars in profits. Now, they needed a new 'war' so that McDonnell-Douglass, Lockheed-Martin, the Carlyle Group and Halliburton could make BILLIONS more in profits, thanks to the gullible American taxpayers.
The "story" with why we're still in the 'war' is because there is still OIL to be sucked out Iraq's sands and there is still BILLIONS of dollars to be made from WAR PROFITEERING. -RKO- 05/02/07

US forces are still in Iraq because in their absence the country would disintegrate into four areas: the Kurdish north, the Sunni center, the Shia south and a Baghdad war zone. I don't support the invasion but that is the situation on the ground now. A united Iraq is a fallacy created at the end of the first world war by European powers and only maintained by ruthless force since then.

Technically, it's not a war anymore. we're assisting the Iraqi govt with a religious insurrection.

Or some such silly horse crap like that.

We're trying to clear out the terrorists, which we can't do completely without destroying Syria and Saudi Arabia.

We're kinda screwed, if you get my point.
