i work in a fish store and i get this question all the time. the best fish for a small tank your size are iridescent sharks, tetras, and algae eaters. let me know if this helps also go to a local fish store and ask them where the small community fish are at.

Really you have a huge variety of fish to choose from. Once your tank is set up and cycled, most of the more common community fish will do well and require about the same amount of maintanance. In a 10 gallon, I think it's hard to beat 2-3 small schools of little tetras. 5-6 neons and 5-6 glolight tetras makes a very pretty display. OIhter choices in the same range would be penguin tetras, black neons, checkerboard barbs, gold barbs... the list goes on and on. Basically you're just looking for peaceful fish under about 1.5" long at adult size to be able to put this many in the tank. Add to any of the above a cory catfish or two and your set.

A Platacomonis is always good to have in a freshwater tank because they clean it, including the rocks. They also live really well with Angel fish, which do have some design and will last a little longer than fish like goldfish. If you want a fish tank where you do not have to keep going to buy fish because they keep dying, try buying a large Platacomonis and maybe two or three Oscars. They will last a long time if you properly put ick guard in your tank. My sister has had the same Platacomonis and Oscar for nearly 10 years now.

First of all a plecostamus would not be a good choice for a 10 gallon tank as they get very large! Oscars get large and it would be cruel to keep one in a 10 gallon. Also stay away from Chiclids as they are agressive fish and need large territories! If you dared to put even 3 or 4 chiclids in a small tank you would surely lose all your new friends as they will kill each other!! Stay with peaceful community fish!! If you want to get into the fish hobby then you need to do your research!! Knowledge is your best friend if you truly want to be succesful with your new aquarium!! Fish keeping is a bit of a science. You don't just throw fish in a tank and hope for the best! You will surely fail and will then be discouraged from such a fun, interesting hobby!!! Take my advice please and I promise you many years of enjoyable, succesful fishkeeping!!!

beta fish are really low maitenance, but you can not put together 2 males you can however put together a male and a female, or 2 females, just not 2 males, because they will eat each other. They are clean, (they stay cleaner if you keep real plants in the tank.) if you put together a male and female they will reproduce and you can even sell them. just be careful, if any of the offspring are male, the father will eat them , or 2 male offspring will eat eachother. my advice is to get 2 females. however like most animals, the males are the beautiful ones, the females tend to be brown but there are also mant brilliant blue ones, just not as many pretty females, as pretty males.
GOOD LUCK!!!

1st, since your tank has a heater forget about gold fish because the heater will kill them. Please ignore Mellisa, Gold fish only can survive in cold water.
2nd. For 10 gallon the best are small fish that don't make a mess and don't require too much food. Look for small tropical fish.

Gold fish do poorly in small tanks. Go with guppies, but be aware if you get males and females they will breed rapidly and you may need to get another larger tank, or they will start cannibalizing.

I would go with black skirt tetras, this guys will live thru anything just like roaches. They are very active and fun to watch, kind of like little piranhas. They eat anything and have a high tolerance for water parameters.

guppies and mollies are easiest but oscars will live the longest. i had a oscar that lived over 10 years, but u might need to move the oscar to a bigger tank.
