They must not have been earth-worms because I often see them dead in fresh puddles they have drowned in.

Sorry this is not an answer but I think u will find it very interesting. I worked in the Ecuadorian rain forest and I found a large earth worm. It was about 3/4 of an inch and over a yard long . Many if the insects get very large there as they may be 10 years old.

that is already a long time .maybe they had an island to escape to
worms tend to drown after a couple of hours in water
that is why they escape the ground when it gets water logged ,
and in worm culture toilets one has to place bricks or something that serves as an island to serve as a place to escape when there is too much water or urine in the system.

The only reason I'm responding to this question is because it gave me the best laugh I've had all day! If I ever put myself in a position for an earthworm to crawl up my butt, it would be because I'm dead and buried. Therefore, the answer is...., he would live out his natural lifespan 'cause he will keep on "cruising". LOL:>).

Hopefully not long, I would hope a nice large bass would eat it all up, while I reel in the nice large bass.

not very long. they breath through their "skin". so they basically drown if they stay in water too long.
