When I calculate tan=2.9/3.8 it should equal around 0.76 however I get answers around .956.

2.9 divided by 3.8 = 0.76

I'm not sure where you were getting 0.956

Is your calculator in the proper mode?

Deg or Rad?

Also, if you are doing the division on the calculator as well make sure it is in parenthesis so it doesnt divide just one part of it.

It seems to work for me...

2.9/3.8 = about 0.763
tan^-1(0.763) = about 37.35 degrees
tan(37.35) = about 0.763

Maybe you have it in radians mode, and are taking the tangent instead of arctangent first:

tan(0.763 radians) = 0.956
