I am writing an essay about gun control.

My thesis is somewhere along the lines of "Supporters of gun control laws in America say that more gun control laws will save lives, but the fact of the matter is that the current laws we have now are doing very little to prevent deaths and adding more laws would create a more hostile environment."

But I am stuck about what to consider for my main points.

All help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

1. Gun control laws are nearly impossible to enforce until it is too late. i.e. Columbine, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold violated over a dozen laws.

2. Criminals by definition don't obey the law. Therefore, gun control laws only take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

3. Research John Lott and his studies showing that guns are used defensively over two million times a year and that criminals have been shown to be less likely to enter a house or harm a person if there is a chance that they own a gun.

4. Show specific examples of the harm of individual laws. i.e. Laws banning cheap "Saturday night specials" keep guns out of the hands of the poor in high crime areas, people who needs guns the most

One point could be that laws have the wrong focus and these laws are aimed at people who will obey them.

A criminal is not a person who will obey no matter how many laws are put before him. While legal access to guns may be further restricted a criminal intent on getting a gun will simply go outside the legal process anyway and steal a gun to commit the crime anyway.

Furthermore, for a first-time offender, there will be no criminal record to check against anyway, regardless of how much stricter gun control laws become. Cho Seung-Hwi was able to get a gun legally because he was not entered into the criminal system and had no felony charges against him.

Also, consider cost-benefit analysis. More gun control laws means a greater effort to enforce. If authorities do not have the resources to enforce, then more gun control laws will have no effect.

How about looking at and if you can work it out do something like pros and cons of gun control and maybe some of the history behind our "right" to own a gun. For example when this law was made the plan of using the guns was for self defense against Indians and wild animals. Also note the difference in the type of gun then and now. Then the guns were the one shot type where you had to load the powder, ram it in, then load the shot, not these semi automatic type things they have now. If all else fails give your paper to your teacher/professor and ask if you are on the right track and if not ask for help.

i don't get this.

a law is a law and is not necessarily a popularity contest.

if we allow the nra gun crowd to have their way, soon they will be wanting to wear their guns 'dodge city' style on their belts.

if you want to make a case for SANE gun control, just look at the gun related deaths in nations like japan and germany - both have pretty large populations and have almost zero gun related deaths.

I suggest you check out how gun control laws in other countries have affected "safety".

I think you will find an altogether different story.

Besides, how can a child shoot himself with Daddy's gun from the nightstand if daddy doesn't have a gun?

Don't bother, there is no significant amount of gun control to care about.

Say that we should have the right to own a gun but we should not abuse that power.

gun control laws only make it harder for law-abiding citizens to acquire guns, because criminals normally do not go through the proper channels anyways
