StupidKupid.. "only $40 million has been used so far in rebuilding"
thats all I need to read....its truly heartbreaking and sad that our govt. would do this.....Have any of you guys been to New Orleans? I helped in relief work and it breaks my heart... the news wants to portray the people of New Orleans as crooks, or lazy people who just want handouts, and who are looters and criminals and from reading some of the racists comments on here, few people think the same way.. but that is so FAR from the facts, there are a lot of hardworking people with families and educational backgrounds from WHITE to BLACK and in between who lost everything....

and I agree with you on the statement that some did take advantage of the system and used their Red Cross Cards so buy purses and sneakers.. but that ratio of people was small and did not represent the majority as a whole of those who truly needed help...

Yes it bothers me. This government is great at screwing people over. It also bothers me that this kind of thing could happen again. I live in Pensacola, FL(A virtual hurricane magnet) The year before Katrina, Hurricane Ivan devestated our town and the relief/recovery was pathetic. It wasn't as well known as the Katrina incident(for valid reasons, Katrina was awful), but it was no fun at all for us. We got hit by a few other hurricanes that same year, as well. After being through many hurricanes, and realizing that Katrina could've easily turned and headed straight for us, I can't believe how the government could keep getting worse at handling these situations. It's frightening to think about the possibility of environmental issues(global warming) may be causing more ferocious hurricanes, while our government ignores the needs of the people and offers half-assed help while the rich get richer.
Sure, many of those people may just be seeking handouts. There were many reports of people getting their check and driving to the nearest casino and wasting it all. I can see the argument for cutting those people off, but you can't assume every victim would be ignorant like that.

The ways and means of bureaucracy continue to astound. I'm not really surprised; it would mean a loss of face if our government had to accept donations from other countries for something that it should have been able to handle on its own. However, since I know that they're still dealing with the mess down there, I can see that the government not only could not handle it, but was too ignorant to accept outside help because of that fact. So yes, it does bother me; especially when I had about a hundred different organizations send me e-mails and leave voice mail about how I had to do my part for my country...

Read carefully, not all of the 814 million was stopped. It was a huge castrophe. People depend too much on our Gov't. Much of the money that was given to individuals were spent on spending sprees. You have to place the blame on them too. If your house is wiped out, you don't use the money to buy Playstations and other useless crap. This, and other wasteful practices have contributed to the delays of funds.
"Most of the aid went uncollected, including $400 million worth of oil. Some offers were withdrawn or redirected to private groups such as the Red Cross. The rest has been delayed by red tape and bureaucratic limits on how it can be spent."

Not one bit....what bothers me is the whole "I have my hand out so you owe me" mentality....
What the article doesn't state is that many who had their hands out were not eligible...and that only so much money was going to be given to individuals in the first place...many saw it as a cash cow to be milked...but it doesn't work that way...
There were many people who "lived" in New Orleans, but did not own property that tried to claim benefits as if they did own property...I dealt with many like that in the shelters here in Austin, San Antonio and Houston.
My heart goes out to those who legitimately lost their homes that they owned...to the other scammers...I got nothin' for ya...

It does, indeed.
After three decades of donation for charity and special occasions, you'd think the world would be a better place by now. Something's like totally wrong here.
