A chain lasts the life of the engine. I never could figure out why they put those fragile belts in some cars instead of chains.

A cam belt has a shorter life compared to a cam chain, both both need to be repalced at certain intervals. Rule of thumb, for a cam belt, about 50 000kms and cam chain about 80 000kms. The chain eventaully starts to stretch. It is worth doing it as the cost of a chain/belt is far cheaper than a complete head job!

Until it streatches or breaks.
what roy said but, if you do replace it make sure you do the idlers and tension rollers at the same time. Do the complete job once. Or you'll be going after the rest not long after you do just the chain.

"Chain" or belt? There is a difference. A typical belt needs to be changed around 60,000 miles whereas a chain may never need to be replaced (hopefully!)

Not all timing chains have idlers and tensioners however they do have sprockets and cams and if you have any of the above then you need to replace all.
