Most times when I get one of the old-style £20 notes there is writing on them - numbers like 1200, 720, 640, 420, in the round space to the left of the Queens head. Obviously these represent a total of money - but I am wondering why people need to write this on the notes?

Usually people who have to count vast piles of cash. When I worked in a cash & carry we took £10,000 a day some times and some staff would make note of the total on the top £20 of the pile.
