Mac OS X Tiger is the current release, which is 10.4. Mac OS X Leopard is the upcoming release, which is 10.5.

Leopard is set to be released in October. You're safe to get a Mac with Tiger now. Tiger is a great operating system and still better than Vista. You don't have to worry about it when you buy a Mac, a new Mac always comes with the latest version of Mac OS X.

That guy was totally wrong... I think he said that just to confuse you. Panther was 10.3.

Here's the timeline by version number:

Mac OS X Public Beta "Kodiak"
Mac OS X v10.0 "Cheetah"
Mac OS X v10.1 "Puma"
Mac OS X v10.2 "Jaguar"
Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther"
Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger"
Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard" (planned for release in October 2007)

Vista is a joke; far too many problems it! I'm very annoyed because I paid so much money for a half-baked product. I bought a MacBook a couple of weeks ago, upgraded to Leopard a few days ago and I absolutely love it! I used to think Mac users were just BS'ing when they said Macs "just work", but it really is true. I've used Windows all my life but I'm glad I've finally seen the light. OS X is the future; I will only use vista at work because I have no choice.

The iMac is one of Apple's desktop computers, the all-in-one with the built in screen. I'm assuming you want to know which of the two versions of Operating System you mentioned would come with it.

If you are getting a new Mac of any kind in the next few months it will have the newest version of Apple's Operating System Ten (or OSX) pre-installed. The current Version of OSX is 10.4, code-named "Tiger" which was first released in 2005. This version is available now for purchase from Apple, or other re-sellers. However, you will not need to buy it seperately, it comes with your new Mac (pre-installed and on restoration DVDs).

Apple is currently developing the next version of OSX, Version 10.5, code-named "Leopard." This version is not released yet, and is not expected to be till October. If you were to buy a Mac after it is released, it will either be pre-installed, or if it is not, you should be able to get a software upgrade from Apple for a small fee to cover the cost of shipping you the upgrade DVD. This is a service Apple has offered in the past to buyers who bought a new Mac AFTER the release of a new version of OSX, most people assume they will do so again this time.

To correct another posted answer, OSX 10.3 "Panther" is actually the last version of OSX, not the upcoming version. It preceded OSX 10.4 "Tiger", but is by no means obsolete. Panther is still supported by Apple, and lots of Macs are still running on it (like the Powerbook I'm typing on now . . .).

Leopard. Panther won't be available until the fall, or so they say.

The Version numbers tell all.
