I had what I had considered the best job in my life and then some politics happened whiched caused me to leave. I found a job makin more money, very long term and a place i can be conmfortable. I was recently asked by my old company to come back with a promotion, increase in pay from what i am making now and at the position, title and responsibilities i wanted in the first place. It is not as stable business as the one I am in but i did like it alot.
Would it be reasonable to go back? I have been at this new company for about 6 months now and seem to be wanted here, just not sure how much higher they will go on the pay scale.

I had, at one time, elaborate rules and cross checks to decide on a job. Now it boils down to two questions. Is it illegal? Will the pay me more, before incentives, than I am making now? A no and a yes gets you an new employee.

Hate to say it, but, other than for very few, any more career planning than that is a waste of time.

Only YOU can answer that question.

You have to weigh the risk and the benefit of each in the context of the current job market.

What is your current savings? What are your other responsibilities? Kids? Wife? House? How much risk can you take? How would you deal with the worst case senario, which is, you take the old job back, and not liking it.

No one can answer these questions for you, but yourself.

HOWEVER, whatever you do, DO NOT discuss this old job with your current employer, especially after only 6 months on the job. Doing so is similar to giving them a resignation saying "hold on to it." It shows the lack of committment with the new company. It result in severe consequences now or later.

Have the "politics" that happened when you left changed since you left? Or will you be above them in your new job decription? Cause my general belief is that good things can get better for the long term, but negatives (like office politics) can seem better for a while, but rarely change for good- unless the people in power change. Given that the old job is not as stable as the current one, I'd give hard thought to going back, since it's often unwise to revisit old relationships, both personal and professional.

maybe you should discuss it with your current employer - see how they feel about losing you - what your career path is and how long would it take to get there - if the old company had political problems before they probably still do or may have again in the future - if it's a huge raise and you can put up with all the bs then go back to the old company - i would talk to my current employer first though

Well, in my opinion job security is more important than more money. Should you go back to your old job, who's to say you will not be let go due to "politics" again? I believe if stability is not there you should stay where you are.
