There are other options, but the best one I can come up with is to use a very tiny motor.

When a cell phone or a pager vibrates it is because a little motor with a weight starts to spin around. You can buy these motors one line (I found one at American Science Surplus). You will need to get a micro switch and button cell batteries, soldering knowledge and some thin water.

You will have to disassemble the car and hollow out the interior for the parts. The car may be too small to put things in it so you might have to mount part of it on top of the car.

The hot wheels cars use a thin length of wire to hold the wheels so you will have to replace that thin length with the axel of each tiny motor (2 will be required). Then you will put the button cell batteries into the car. You might have to install the micro switch on top of the car, you need a micro switch that has a click on and click off function not a function that lets you turn it on only when you are holding down on the button (a momentary on switch).

You press the switch to start the motors and the car will move. It might move in a circle because no two motors move at the exact same speed (at least on this scale).

This job may be a tough one and you may have to sacrifice a few cars to get it right, but it is one way to put some life in your cars.

If you just want to toss the car around then you can build a trebuchet or a catapult. I have found plans for both online and there are companies that even make small scale ones. Or you could just use the old slingshot.

Back in the "old days" of the 1970's, there were some hotwheels sets with these motorized buildings, you set up a loop or a dual loop, and the cars were sent thru two foam powered wheels inside the buildings, there was an accelerator arm on the top to slow them down or speed them up. I forget the name ( I actually still have my originals out in the garage in storage). Open-wheeled cars were not recommended for this,as the axles would bend. But you could make some cars fly around that loop! I believe they've had something similar in the past 10 years as well. You'll have to research hotwheels to find it.
