Bo Jackson was a beast in college. Deangelo Williams has the most career yards though, go Panthers.

Harold "Red" Grange, the Galloping Ghost from Illinois. All-American three years, when there were only 3 years eligibility. Leading rusher on 1923 National Champions. 402 total yards against Michigan in the dedication game for Memorial Stadium (4 first quarter touchdowns, 6 in the game). He was so great, and so famous, that he basically made the NFL be what it has turned into. The "Wheaton Iceman" signed with the Bears two days after his last game at Illinois, and the next weekend the Bears sold out Wrigley Field after averaging less than 10,000 fans prior to that in 1925. The Bears went on a barnstorming tour, and every game sold out just to see Grange. If he wasn't the best back ever, he was definitely the most popular.

There have been a lot of great running backs in the college so it is hard to pick. Archie Griffin would definitely be near the top of the list but I think there is one guy who I haven't seen anyone else answer who deserves to be in the discussion. Ron Dayne is the all time leader in rushing yards for college football with 7,125 yards. He rushed for 246 yards in 1999 and 200 yards in 2000 in back to back Rose Bowl victories for Wisconsin. He shares the record with Ricky Williams and Marcus Allen for the most games with over 200 yards rushing. He holds the Big Ten record for TD's with 71. He won the Heisman in 1999. I think he definitely has to be included in the discussion and I think he would be my top pick.

ESPN recently suggested it was Herschel Walker first, O.J. Simpson second, Earl Campbell third. I never saw O.J. at anything resembling his best, and only saw Earl in the pros. But Herschel was amazing.

The only reason not to select him high in the rankings is that he only played three years, but then, prior to 1972, freshmen were ineligible, so the best players only played three years anyway. He was the best collegiate running back I've ever seen.

If the voters remember that it's the PRO FOOTBALL Hall of Fame, not the NFL Hall of Fame, and remember that former USFLers Jim Kelly and Reggie White are now in, maybe they'll elect Herschel. He deserves it.

this isn't even a question its barry sanders..ya know the guy who holds the most yards in a season (he almost ran for FREAKING 3 THOUSAND YARDS..AND HAD 44 TD'S..AND THAT'S ONLY RUSHING! he scored a few td's on kick offs) ALL IN ONE SEASON. NOT A CAREER!

but its general said that its either walker (hersheal oh i can't spell his name) or archie griffin. after all he is the only 2 time hiesman winner (bo jackson is also on the list..and one would have to look at ricky williams who had back to back 2 thousand yard seasons. no other back playing for a major team has ever done that.

I have to say Reggie Bush. He could catch passes in the backfield and just take off 60-70 yards down the field. Also with his consistant running game.
