i was just a pup myself in the 70's, and a right chubby baby at that ( should see the pics haha chubby with dimples and rosy cheeks awwwww lmao ) , at school there was one or to overweight kids and they got bullied a fair amount ( not by myself i must add ) I'm guessing because they stood out from the crowd, i was lucky i had my dads genes and shot up in height from an early age , so the puppy fat soon went away.
but nowadays it really is a different story , just walking down the street , kids stuffing there faces with big macs , chips , and a bucket load of sweets seems to be the norm , OK this is where i go into "old man" mode , but when i was a lad , we got about a quid a week pocket money , and yeah i loved sweets just like everybody else, but havin a burger and fries was a rare treat , and i was too busy running about playing footy , or hounds and hares, army lol and silly things like that ........... do kids still play these days ?? or are they stuck in-front of the TV 24/7........ it seems to by a rarity to see parents that wont just take the easy options, and give into there kids demands, although i'm not really qualified to comment on that , and I'm sure it cant be easy .great question pups xxxxxxxxx:)

I think I maybe had one kid in my class who was overweight. We were pretty much all skinny. I will tell you why, in my opinion. It's because from the second school got out, we played outside ALL DAY. Didn't matter if it was cold or hot. We didn't notice the weather. Now, all kids want to do is play video games, watch cartoons or sit at their computers (like we're doing now!). Heck, we had 4 freaking channels when I was growing up! Cartoons were on Saturday mornings only! Kids simply should not be overweight - their metabolisms shouldn't allow for it. They have so much energy and we as parents need to make sure they have outlets for it.

I was only born in the 80s but I would not think that there were as many overweight kids in the 70s as there are now because of the fact that technology keeps people indoors more than ever.

Obesity in children and teens is definitely on the rise.

Based on data from the 1999–2004 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), the prevalence of overweight in children ages 6–11 increased from 4.0 percent to 17.5 percent compared with data from 1971–74.

The prevalence of overweight in adolescents ages 12–19 increased from 6.1 percent to 17.0 percent.

Not one really overweight kid in the whole school! We all walked or cycled to school, spent evenings and weekends working for our pocket money...and the only take away meal was an occasional bag of chips (and the bag was very small!) School meals were healthier and smaller than today and PE was really energetic gym or sport three times a week.

I dont actually remember seeing very many overweight kids when I was in school in the 70s.

I think we've raised a new generation... I call them nintendo kids. They come home from school (which by the way, in Texas, my kid hasnt had to take gym since 5th grade!) grab a snack, turn on T.V. or video games and sit on their little lumpy rumps till dinner.

In the "olden days" we dropped our satchels (backpacks) on the porch, hollered "We're home!!!" and beat it off down the road with friends, either walking, running or riding bikes until dinner time.

Technology hasnt helped our kids.

We had one obese girl in high school and some of the wrestlers were large;but not like today. In the 60's and 70's chubby size clothes were difficult to find for kids. Now even the junior sizes are plus sizes. We used to ride bikes and play with dog and recess was jumping rope and baseball.

there were no really overweight kids, probably a few with puupy fat but a lot of kids do have that and burn it off. What really shocks me is the amount of obese and I mean really fat kids you see walking around with their parents that have a chocolate bar in one hand and a packet of crisps in the other. I bumped into one of my daughter's old nursery friends mum and daughter the other day. The girl is only 7 and she was huge with a stomach hanging out through her t-shirt. She was scoffing a huge icecream and was carrying a bag of maltesers in the other hand. What is wrong with the parents, surely they can see what they are doing to their children!!

Not only were there not many over weight kids but neither were there as many adults.I saw a study on it that linked it or that it co-insided with the change in soda from using real sugar to using high fructose corn syrup. The fast food industry didn't help either. If you read the labels on food you find it in so many products now even jelly and jam.

There was one overweight person in my high school class of 32 people. He was a US citizen living with us in England though so it might not count. I don't recall any local pupils who were in any way obese like kids are these days.
