Researchers are continually investigating new treatments for MND. These include:
antioxidants, such as co-enzyme Q10, to "mop up" waste molecules before they damage nerve cells

Hi siriol h, Coenzyme Q10 has exploded onto the health scene. This powerful mineral has many health saving properties. It is responsible for essential chemical reactions in your body as well as being a dynamite antioxidant.
What's more, Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 occurs naturally in your body, (and that's good), but unfortunately, as you age, have nutritional deficiencies or get sick you are producing less of this essential mineral.
And check this out...studies show that an estimated 25% deficiency will cause serious metabolic health problems. At 75%, death will follow and that would mean no more birthday cake for you!
CoQ10 plays a key role in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) needed for energy production in every cell. It also has a powerful antioxidant that helps guard against damage from free radicals. Look article: http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/The_Benefits_Of_Coenzyme_Q10/

The safest course is to schedule an appointment with a good neurologist. Discuss your objectives, questions, concerns, and other alternative treatments. If Co Q 10 seems viable, have the doctor schedule a liver panel test. Liver panels should be repeated regularly throughout the course of treatment.

Good Question! CQ10 is a enzyme that we need but it seems some people are deficient? Likewise some drugs we take make us deficient. I know for example people who take the cholesterol drugs statins end up with peripheral neuropathy and all they need to do is take CQ10. I purchased some for my Mother who is on the statins and her symptoms, pins and needles, restless legs, cold hands and feet have improved. I always think these things are worth a try, because you never know. They might work for some and not for others.

I found this article on a site which i find is a really good source of info for nutrituin, supplments & alternative & natural medicine. Please see article on Motor neurone disease 7 the 2nd/3rd article on Co-Q10.
It doesnot link CoQ10 with this disease but it does mention its importance for people with fatigue syndrome.

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

For the past 3 years I have suffered daily with neuropathy. Well it’s been just 1 week and I just cannot put into words how brilliant my results have been. I have absolutely no more hyper sensitivity and no more agonizing burning pains. I can’t explain it, but this thing works. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your secret with me.

CoQ-10
Coenzyme Q-10: Protection for Heart and Immune System
Suppose there was a nutrient that could boost your energy level, protect and strengthen your heart and body and help normalize your blood pressure. Suppose this same nutrient could even play an important role in improving the effectiveness of your immune system and because it’s completely natural to your body, was non toxic and produced no dangerous side effects. Wouldn't you say, "I need that in my life?"
Coenzyme Q-10, a relatively obscure member of the coenzyme family, is a valuable nutrient that every cell in your body must have in order to produce energy. Discovered by Dr. Folkers, M.D., who is also a scientist more than 30 years ago, CoQ-10 has recently been basking in the spotlight of the international medical research community. During the past decade an overpowering number of studies have shown that CoQ-10 plays a very vital role in the prevention and care of major health problems.
It has also become apparent that illness and the effects of aging cause many people to develop deficiencies of CoQ-10. This results in an imbalance of the body's system. Studies have recently shown that CoQ-10, when taken as a nutritional supplement, helps increase energy, protect and strengthen the heart and body, helps normalize blood pressure and helps promotes healing.
CoQ-10 is an essential component of the cellular compartment (mitochondria), where it plays a major role in energy production. Although CoQ-10 can be synthesized in the body, deficiencies can be a result from impaired CoQ-10 synthesis due to nutritional deficiencies, a genetic, impaired or acquired defect in CoQ-10 synthesis, increased tissue needs or from some cholesterol lowering drugs. Cardiovascular diseases such as angina, hypertension, mitral valve prolapse and congestive heart failure are examples of diseases which require increased tissue levels of coenzyme Q-10. In addition, the elderly, in general, may have increased CoQ-10 requirements. The decline of CoQ-10 levels in body tissues as we get older is thought to be partly responsible for age-related deterioration of the immune system.
CoQ-10 deficiency is common in individuals with heart disease. Heart tissue biopsies in patients with various heart diseases showed a CoQ-10 deficiency in 50-75 percent of cases. As one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body, the heart may be metabolically susceptible to the effects of coenzyme Q-10 deficiency. Accordingly, CoQ-10 has shown great promise in supporting individuals with heart disease and high blood pressure. CoQ-10 has also been shown to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides, while raising HDL (good) cholesterol. CoQ-10 is often recommended to individuals with diabetes and periodontal disease. Research also indicates CoQ-10 may be of value in diseases associated with immunodeficiency, to help healing of gastric ulcers, to improve physical performance and endurance and to support weight loss in some obese patients.
In addition to serving as a co-factor in energy production, coenzyme Q-10 functions as a powerful antioxidant. Oxiclative damage contributes to the aging process. This suggests that coenzyme Q-10 supplementation should be induced in any comprehensive antioxidant program. CoQ-10 supplements are typically recommended at a minimum daily dosage of 60 mg.
The quality of CoQ-10 varies greatly from supplier to supplier. Less than 4% of Q10 products sold use naturally fermented Q10 (made from special algae in Japan) - most products are made using synthesized Q10, made by mixing vitamins and minerals together, or from an extract from the tobacco plant! It takes nine months to produce naturally fermented Q10.
In an experimental double blind study, 10 men and women with stable angina pectoris received in a random order 150 mg. of CoQ-10 daily or a placebo. After 4 weeks, subjects as compared to controls experienced a 53% reduction in the frequency of anginal episodes. 27 patients with ventricular premature heart beats and no clinical finding of organic cardiopathies received CoQ-10. Results were markedly beneficial in 22% and the rest received reduction in their irregularities. In a double blind study of 80 patients, daily administration of CoQ-10 for 12 weeks increased cardiac ejection fraction, significantly reduced shortness of breath and increased muscle strength for 89% of them. Twelve patients with advanced congestive heart failure and an insufficient response to diuretic and digitalis received 100 mg. daily and were followed for 7 months. Subjectively they felt less tired. Activity tolerance increased, shortness of breath at rest disappeared, heart rate fell and heart volume decreased. 34 patients with severe congestive cardiomyopathy received 100 mg. of CoQ-10 daily. 82% improved as shown by increased stroke volume and cardiac index. 2 year survival rate was 62% compared to 25% for a similar series of patients treated by conventional method alone.
CoQ10 is also available with Vitamin E and Rice Bran in Gel Capsules.
