Russian domination of the world ballet world ended with the end of the Soviet Union. The reason they dominated for so long was due to incredible amounts of money used to support large ballet companies and programs designed to screen kids for dance talent regardless of socioeconomic status (no big deal, they were ALL poor). Girls with the right "look" (skinny with great feet) were in great demand. That "look" was also pushed by George Balanchine here in the USA. Ballet was a great propaganda tool also. I have a friend with a large Southwestern city ballet company who literally was dropped off at a local ballet school in a Baltic country at the age of 9 - tried out and immediately accepted to the local school and then moved up to the national ballet. Their education, diet, dance training, was all controlled closely. The major ballet companies in the former Soviet Union have fallen on somewhat hard times and many of the dancers leave for better paying jobs in the West.

Because they can't afford to eat so they're already skinny and their parents sell them to the slave owner, I mean ballet school to 'train' them. Just like that Romanian gymnasts back in the day. They have no choice but to be dedicated from such a young age...

because, in russia, they're trained hard pretty much from the time they can walk. So, they're forced into it, it's sometimes all that they know how to do.
