Elite runners are paid performance and appearance money by the big European track meets. It varies by the meet and the value of the runner to the meet. Most of their money comes from shoe contracts. Distance runners are paid prize money, which is a lot more than sprinters are paid.

A heard they are called rabbits after the thing the dogs chase in dog races. They get the same reward everyone else does win they win the race. In the 1994 Los Angeles Marathon the rabbit Paul Pilkington did win when the other members refused to keep up with the rabbit, some thinking the rabbit would either burn out or technically wasn't allowed to win (like the pace car in car racing doesn't actually race).
