You can send it to a record company, but chances are it'll be tossed in the garbage. All labels have a rule about accepting unsolicted matieral - they just don't take it. It's to protect themselves and the artists. (If your son give the demo to someone like Jay-Z - without a contract - and Jay-Z or someone on his label records something that sounds like it, that leaves them wide open for a lawsuit from your son for using your son's stuff. See what I mean?)

My best advice would be for them to get themselves out there as much as possible. Have them perform if possible, as much as possible to get their names and music out there. Otherwise, having the music on myspace is a good start - you never know who will listen to it! Contact local radio stations and see if they play unsigned artists. Most newspapers have an entertainment section - contact someone there for a little publicity.

Two cases in point:

My friends got noticed because they tried to get on a showcase at a rock club in NYC back in the day and weren't picked, so they set up outside on the sidewalk and played. Sony records eventually made them an offer.

Other friends of mine were shopped by another label because the best friend of the girlfriend of an A&R (artists & repitoire - basically the person who gets an artist signed) rep had the tape and passed it along.

One important thing to do - BEFORE you do anything else - is to make sure the material is copyrighted. This will cover their butts if someone uses it. I would also seek the counsel of an entertainment lawyer in your area - again to cover backsides.
