In the time since i bought it,and place it in the hole still root bound we had a cold snap for a week. It ran out the cold spell well, but since it got warm, has lost all color, the leaves are shriveled...the branches are still flexible. Is it possible all this is due to the plant being root-bound

Winter Gem are usually pretty tough. make sure it's getting enough water. if you can cut a branch and still see green it's still alive

It could well be -- any time that you plant a root-bound plant outdoors, you should "scrape" the outside of the root ball to break up and loosen the root so they can make new connections, grow outside of their bound limits, etc. Also, it make is easier for the dirt to come into close contact to the entire system to give it the best access to food and water.
