Having played both, Guild Wars first, World of Warcraft is the overall better game.
The biggest thing Guild Wars have over WoW are the graphics and no monthly fees.
As for gameplay, WoW has MUCH more content and there is always something to do.
WoW's community tend to be slightly more mature than the ones in GW but that also depends if you're on roleplaying server or a pvp server.
Player vs Player content in WoW is ok. There are some things lacking in WoW but it's not horrible. I heard Guild Wars have some decent pvp but I never done it so I can't offer an honest opinion about that.
Is WoW worth the monthly fees? Well let's say I have been playing for over a year. But it's also about you are looking for in a game.
Do you want to play with people more than solo work? Guild Wars will be a better choice because a lot of the missions are impossible to solo, even with the NPC henchmen.
Do you want to have a little more balance, as in solo some quests and group up for others? WoW is the better choice. Also in WoW, you can group up with up 40 people to fight against big bosses.
Do you like to do something besides quests or grinding for money? WoW again. You can have 2 professions and make stuff(and money).
Do you like to roleplay? WoW again. There are servers for people who like to roleplay but it doesn't mean you can hide from the dumb people. In Guild Wars, I haven't seen any roleplay other than people wanting to cyber. 0_0
Do you like to PvP or just stick with killing NPCs? I haven't PVP in Guild Wars but I have done a lot in WoW. There are PVP servers where players on the opposite alliance can attack you pretty much anywhere. It is very intense but could be too dramatic for first time online players. Note: Regardless if you're on a pvp, normal, rp-pvp or rp server, the opposite faction can attack you if you have yourself 'flagged' for warfare. You don't have to go to a specific area for pvp at times. You can even go into an enemy city and attack them. Get enough people and you can even kill one of the cities' leader.
With all the nonsense I had said, I just recommend going to guildwars.com and worldofwarcraft.com and see what you think. WoW does have a free trial so you can always give that a spin.
Happy Gaming

I personally am a fan of Guild Wars. Besides the obvious of not having to pay for the monthly fee, Guild Wars is just a great game. I find the graphics are far better, not so "cartoony" like World of Warcraft. There is also the levels, Guild Wars levels max out at level 20 so very quickly, everyone is on a similar playing field. There is not the "level grind" some other games have. I would highly recomend Guild Wars. Start with Prophocies and then pick up Nightfall. Enjoy!

WoW and GW are very different games and shouldn't really be compared directly.
WoW has monthly fees and one expansion pack recently released, but not necessary to play.
Guild Wars has three separate games (Prophises, Nightfall, and Factions) any one of which can be played by itself, but all of which can be combined together to increase your options. There is one more true expansion pack (rather than a complete game) to be released around December, then Guild Wars 2 will go into production for a late ~2008 release. All three GW games have no monthly fee.

Both WoW and Guild Wars are good games in their own right. I know plently of people who play both (and why not GW is free to play). They are in fact two very different types of MMO. What you will like better depends greatly on what features you like in a game.
WoW has a persistant world where Guild Wars is completely instanced. GW was created to avoid the downsides of a persistant world such as kill stealing giving you and your party complete reign over the area or mission you are in. However, you do loose a lot of Role Playing opportunities that persistant worlds provide. WoW also has a more robust crafting system. GW has the better PvP style in my opinion.

WoW has better PvE content, with the focus being on gear, and it's being updated all the time. Guild Wars is better for PvP, with your spec being the imporatant thing. WoW has monthly fees, but as I said, it gets updated far more often the GW.

I have not tried Guild Wars, but I've always been told WoW was better because WoW actually repairs and adds new material into the game approx. once a week (every tuesday is maintanence for approx. 3-4 hours).
WoW costs between $12-15 to play a month which is chump change if you think about it ($0.50 a day).
I've been playing WoW since Dec 2005 and still love to play it.

Its awesome you have to pay monthly fees but the fee is only $13.00 a month if you do the 6 month trial its way easier than Guild wars and the emotes are funnier lol

World Of Warcraft...
Reasons:
1. Party System (More then 6 people out of a city)
2. Killing System
3. Questing
4. Leveling System (yet a little more difficult)
5. Exploring System
6. Monsters (not detail)
7. Guild-(Free Invite) (Usually more then 100 people)
8. PvP system
Like my reasons? Alot more but I just don't know them.
