In this day of technology and GO GO GO attitude, most of it comes from short hand when sending quick messages, especially texts. I had a hard time when I started my new job communicating with people overseas because they would short hand everything (such as fty, sz, po, ttl, px, etc). I was so confused...but now, I'm so accustomed to writing short hand, I don't even notice it. Speaking it, however, is a whole other matter. I hate it when people apply the short hand and bad grammar to speaking (seen that new ATT? commercial with the girl and her mom?), its so annoying. I've actually witnessed people say L.O.L. instead of laughing.

The pendulum is swinging back to the time when there were no real "rules" for spelling - check out anything from Elizabethan times. So we're expanding is that more is allowable. At the same time, our vocabulary (in the US at least) is contracting. Tests show that people in the 45-60 year range have about half again the vocabulary of most high-school students. Weird, but true!

How about: "The Internet allows people with all levels of English skills to access information from around the world without revealing where they are or what their background might be, but also making it clear that English is a language that can be easily mangled."?
