John Bell was molesting his eldest daughter Betsy Bell which 'upset' the spirit haunting them. Lucy Bell knew about it but stayed silent. The spirit convinces Betsy to poison her father to cease the hauntings, she complies as Lucy looks on. Cut back to the present and the latest occupant realises her daughter's being molested by her own father too

The movie was a poor version of the book. Its left up to the viewer to decide if it was a ghost haunting the family or actually a self defense mechanism of the girl to prevent her father from sexually abusing her further. I read the book in about 2 hrs, its quite short but very interesting. If you can, look up Kate Batt's Witch, that is the phenomenon the book follows and the movie is loosly based on.

It was the father that was hurting the girl.The ghost was the spirit of the girl, (her innocense you can say), all she was trying to do is get the girl to react and see that it was her dad the one who messed her up. The ghost was basically re-enacting what the dad did to her during the abuse. That's why every time they tried to get the girl out of town to save her, something would prevent them from leaving- it was the girl's ghost stopping them because she wanted everybody to find out what the dad had done to her and make him pay.

The dad. There wasn't even a ghost. It was supposed to signify the evil presence of the father.

Was this the movie that was derived from the Sightings report? If so, it was the dad that was getting hurt.
The people moved out of the house and the current renters report no strange activity at all.

It's a pretty deep film and yes it was the dad.

Yes i have. It wasn't all that great but it's watchable(LOL) But it was the dad they were trying to hurt but put his daughter in the midst of everything.
