I have a 3 month old baby who is going to start coming to work with me. I have tried several baby carroers and it doesn seem to work. First of all, my back hurts alot and also her legs start getting red like if the blood was not flowing correctly. Please can anybody help me find a good baby carrier or did this happen to anybody else????

Slings are wonderful. You can position your baby in a variety of ways and take pressure off your back. Plus, your baby gets the person to person contact they need!

The baby's legs need to be at a 90 degree angle from the baby's body (more or less, don't need a protractor) and 90 degrees from each other. Carriers that cause the legs to dangle place all the weight on the crotch or spine. Some structured carriers the leg holes also cause pressure points. This can be fixed by putting a folded blanket or small pillow under the baby's bum to bring their legs up higher (or chuck the carrier).

The best carriers are wraps, but they take more effort to learn. However with a wrap you can do almost any carry front, back or hip. You can even breastfeed in them. The weight is evenly distributed over your back with wide pieces of cloth. They are generally comfortable. However they can be a little warm. Though you can get some made out of very lightweight, slightly see through/meshy breathable fabric. Particularly the ones from the more southern countries (Mexico or Guatamala are common)

Asian Baby Carriers/Mei Teis are easier to use, and less bulky. You can do basic front and basic back carries. You want WIDE straps. There are a few different styles.

Don't worry that if the knots come undone the baby will fall to the ground (with the ABC or wrap). The friction makes it hard to get the darned things off when you want them off! Let alone trying to slide the baby down an inch or something.

If your baby can sit up with minimal support then you can also look into the backpack carriers. I recommend the ones from hiking companies. I know Mountain Equipment Co-op makes two that are completely adjustable, however as far as I know they only have stores in Canada. If you can't find a hiking store that makes baby backpacks, go to a hiking store and having them show you what to look for in a backpack in general. It is important that the waist and chest supports are in the right place and the shoulder straps are in a good position. Then you can go try on baby backpacks and have a better idea what to look for to get a good fit for you.

This site has the best information even if it is hard to navigate. It has sewing patterns, buying info, and videos on how to use various carriers.

I love the Maya wrap (http://www.mayawrap.com/). They have the 'traditional' with a large ring you can wear over your right or left shoulder, has a pocket for an emergency diaper and has a great selection of colors and patterns.

Then as the kids get older it can be used to assist with the 'hip' hold and for on the back. There are at least 5 ways to carry babies and toddlers with the wrap. AND if you and dad are close to the same height, he can use it too.

If the wrap seems like too much work, they also have a zip-type pouch that also allows 5 carrying positions.

FYI - I still use it with my 4 yr daughter and my 2 yr son for both hip holds and on the back (boy does it save my back!). I found it for #3, but REALLY wish I had it for #2 (she ALWAYS wanted to be held). They are rated up to 35 lbs., but you decide for yourself.

Good Luck!

Way to go, G-lady! I also still carry my toddlers in my Maya Wrap. I love, love, love my Maya Wrap, and I recommend it to anyone. It's so versatile, and the fabric is perfect--all-cotton, but loosely woven so it stretches a little, but not too stretchy. It's very durable.

If your back hurts, you might look into a wrap-style sling (simple piece of cloth or SPOC) My friend likes her Ultimate Baby Wrap, but I've noticed that her baby drooped because the material is stretchy. I don't know how Asian back carriers work, but they also go over two shoulders. It's great that you're taking baby to work with you! Kudos!

Your back may probably hurt, just like after lifting weights, and holding the baby for a long time. The leg thing is odd though.

I used the bjorn thru 2 babies and loved it. Did take some back strengthening though.

I've heard great things about baby slings. We have a Jeep baby carrier. They can face front or backwards. I've also heard good things about the Baby Bjorn, but they are very expensive. Go to a babies r' us. They have carriers on display and you can feel them and try them on. That should help.

I LOVE my moby wrap! My baby is 4 months old and she sleeps like a baby in the hug hold and I can turn her around to see the world in the lotus/joey hold. I feel like the moby is more secure than the baby bjorn (my husband prefers the bjorn, I guess it is more manly.) and distributes the weight more evenly than a sling.

Also, there is a group called nine in nine out (nino for short). We have a local chapter in my town and I was able to get advise on my choice of wrap. They even had a "library" of wraps and slings tot try out before making a purchase. the website is:

Maybe you will have a group established in your town too!

Good luck!

I LOVE my ring sling. It is very adjustable. I have used mine when my baby was only 6 days old, and I am also using it with my 3.5 year old. There is a lot of useful information, reviews, discussion forums, instructions, and links on
www.thebabywearer.com

I've tried pack carriers and rarely used mine...very uncomfortable. I use my ring sling every day, and I depend on it so much that I keep 2 in my car in case I take one inside and forget to take it back out to the car.
