Having opposite sexes is beneficial because new traits can be introduced into the offspring rather than just having a replica of the parent. This greatly speeds evolution because "mixing" of DNA makes for child that fits the world a little better than its parents. This is also why children from incest often have disabilities. The DNA is too similar. In most animals, it's easy for a male and a female to meet and reproduce. It doesn't take long for us to find a mate. However, with animals such as worms and snails, they hardly ever come across one another, let alone someone of the opposite sex. That's why they're hermaphrodites (both male and female) because in the off chance that they do meet another snail then they're still able to reproduce. If opposite genders in the animal kingdom were causing more harm than good, evolution would have made everyone androgynous long ago. If we're still surviving as a species, it means evolution is doing its job well. Evolution, if you actually took the time to learn about it, is a gradual process. There was no "first" anything because every species has an ancestor.

No one knows with any certainty where and how sex originated but there is plenty of literature regarding why animals including humans continue to have sex. By the way the majority of animals have sex for procreation and maintaining the existance of their species. There are very few animals that have sex for pleasure only however humans are obviously one of them.

If you believe in the theory of Evolution, sex must have originated from animals.
If you believe in the Bible, sex originated from humans (Adam and Eve). Because God created Adam, then Eve, it was God who introduced sex to humans (if you believe in the Bible). I believe the theory of Evolution makes more sense.

God, the creator of the universe and of man, for pleasure and reproduction. He said, be fruitful and multiply. And he wanted it to be in the sanctity of marriage.
