First, I'm not sure what you mean by "good outside for about a few hours." If you mean "put the dog in the backyard for a couple of hours" then most dogs will try to tunnel under the fence or get bored and dig up the plants or paw at the door. Second, all dogs shed, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. All dogs give off dander (dead skin). And dogs that would do best outside (double-coated dogs) will shed hair and dander like there is no tomorrow. Third, most small dogs are yippy dogs. That's been my experience with a yorkie. The 3 Min-Pins I've known have all been yappy. Also, Min-pins are clever, funny, athletic and very dis-obedient, they really need an experienced owner who knows dogs well. A Border Terrier is a small, happy-to-lucky, hardy dog that does well outside (but still isn't really an "outside" dog in terms of "living outside most of the time"). A Westie plays well, really likes people, is easy to care for. A rat terrier is a short-haired dog that is very athletic, loves people (it will sleep under your covers by your feet all night if you let it) and doesn't bark except when strangers come to the house.

no, no, no do not get a dog based on answers. you must take your life and lifestyle into consideration, along with the general qualities of the breed of dog. get a copy of the akc book (at the library if you don't want to buy one) look through it making note of the breeds that interest you, then go back and do some actual research until you find the perfect match. it may sound like a lot of work when getting the cutest puppy would be easier, but this is a 15 year (or more) commitment, our pounds are full of dogs bought with the best of intentions.

Shih Tzu!!
I LOVE my shihtzu pup. He is 10 months old and is awesome!
He's potty trained, super lovable, and self sufficient.
I am at work all day and he is fine with that, and then he is nothing but cuddly when i get home.
I love Munkey!!! He's the best

...and if youre looking for something to replace a "recently lost man".....shih tzu's are perfect. I got munkey about 2 weeks after my ex-boyfriend finally moved out, and i know i would have been pretty lonely/bored if it werent for this dog!

I wouldn't suggest a little dog, and if you did id get a mix breed...because full breded animals have problems because of the inbreeding!

Ours is half Westie, half poodle. She's about 12 pounds (one year old), doesn't shed and is really great. Had her for two months and she hasn't made a mess yet. Really easy to train.
