I've never been, so I was wondering what the event is like, what I should bring, what I should see, and advice at all. Thanks!

I grew up in Boulder back when the Kinetics first started and went to the first several back when it was a home-town thing. What is it like? A lot of college kids having a great time. See all of the "conveyances" prior to the race, because the majority of them won't survive the competition. (the "race") The uniforms and creativity exhibited are from the sublime to the outright hilarious!

Bring sunscreen - lots of sunscreen. And water. Lots of water! And a camera. If you have a digicam that can take video, you will likely get some priceless shots of people sinking in the water or the mud.

There are usually sponsor booths set up and the place tends to have a "frat party" atmosphere. I look forward to the day my kids get to go. Have fun!

It is fun and a little weird. There are two excellent bands this year, so bring all your concert-going stuff. Everything this year has been rearranged, but in years past, it has been kind of spread out, so bring walking shoes. Bring lots of sunscreen and lots of water because they will be selling it at high prices. You can not bring any alcohol in. It is best to not drive to the reservoir, take a shuttle. The shuttle schedule is on KBCO's web site. Kinetics is a really fun day, but it's a whole day thing, so bring supplies to get you through a day in the sun.

The "frat-party" atmosphere someone else mentioned is sorely missing from the tradition now. It's an organised, family event with big corporate sponsors. It's not like it used to be, as is the case with everything in Boulder.

Please make sure to leave your dog at home. Every year there are many people who don't and then lock their pets up in the car all day in the 80 degree heat.
