I've been separated from my wife for 6 months, and we've both realized it's time to start with the divorce. We are very friendly still, so we'd like to avoid lawyers and the courts as much as possible. We've been married for less than 3 years with no kids. Where do we get started to get the papers, etc to file ourselves?

You don't need a lawyer, there are "divorce mediators" who can help you. If your split is relatively amicable, and you can decide on things beforehand, it's the easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to go. It's what me and my ex did. Similar situation, married for less than three years, no kids, etc., just decided it was best that we go on our own ways. We found this mediator, went in for a free consultation, spoke to her, asked a few questions, got a few answers -- so when the time came for us to actually go in and sign papers and get things done, it was quick and easy. The mediator will draft all necessary agreements, prepare and file everything accordingly. Other than the one visit to her office, we never had to deal with lawyers, the courts, paperwork, everything was done. And three months later our divorce was finalized.

Good luck!

I donot know where you live but, in florida, you can go to the local court house and get a divorce kit. It's not that expensive and is pretty simple. This is the best way to go if you both agree that divorce is the way to go and you have already figured out who gets what and who pays what bills. You fill out hte paper work and both sign it and turn it in to the family courts and they give you a court date and you spend a few minutes in front of the judge to finalize it and thats it.
I would definatly check this out first. Just call your local court house and ask them and they will be able to tell you if they have it in your state and what to do.

You can get the paperwork from the clerk at the court. Very simple to do and will only cost filing fees if you both agree on all terms and sign.
