i have a Pearl scale Goldfish and he likes small gaps, and he managed to wedge himself inbetween the filter and the side of the tank, upsidedown!! so as soon as i saw him i moved the filter and he swam off, i could see where he had got himself stuck he had taken off alot of his scales, and damaged the front of his fin. But despite that he seemed fine and swam away as nothing had happened, this was a week ago. over the last few days he looks as thought he is developing fish-rot, his top fin is flaking away and he is hanging around at the top of the tank hardly moving, but still alive. i feel so helpless and guilty like i could have done something to prevent this. i can't stand watching him die, im even considering flushing down the toilet.help?!

This sounds like fin and tail rot.
You need to do a 50% water change then get some Tetracycline (carried at most pet/fish stores) and follow the package directions closely. It will turn your water an amber color then it will turn a reddish color after a couple days, you will also notice some foam at the top of the tank. This is normal.
Goldfish are a dirty fish that put off aLOT of ammonia and require a little more care than your typical tropical fish in that they need more frequent water changes.
Best of luck to you

I don't want to get up your hopes, but fish are susceptible to many diseases.

However, one thing I have seen is that some people don't put live plants in the water and don't leave a good sized area of the tank or bowl unfilled the top quarter or third should be kept empty.

Fish excretement contains ammonia and ammonia kills fish. Real plants like ammonia because it has nitrogen in it and they absorb the ammonia.

Also leave a jar of water out with the top off for 24 hours so the chlorine evaporates. Then withdraw a jar's worth of water and replace in with the new water. Keep the jar near the fish tank so it's the same temperature as the aquarium's water.

Do this every two or three days between aquarium cleanings. It dilutes any remaining ammonia.

Leaving a gap at the top makes this easier.

When the slime coat and scales are scraped off, it is very common for fish to get infections. Try putting some aquarium salt in the tank (there will be instructions on the box as to how much to use), and remember to dissolve it in water before adding to the tank. Aquarium salt will help with a lot of fin and fungal infections. Also, you may want to try turning up the heat temporarily, or putting in a heater for a while. Heat isn't good for goldfish, but it does help with secondary infections. You may save him.

It's too late for the fancy remedies in the fish store. First... change the water. Then add about 1 to 2 teaspoons of kosher salt or sea salt per gallon of water. The rot will get better .... maybe.

there is prob many motives it died. a million) Your bathtub bathtub could desire to attainable have cleansing soap residue in it. this could have killed him. 2) You wiped clean all the water at as quickly as. This stresses the fish out! there is stable micro organism interior the previous water that the goldfish needs. once you do finished new water that's basically approximately like putting them in "skinny air". 3. You used faucet water (interior the bathtub and interior the bowl). faucet water has Chlorine in it. that's poisonous to fish. Altho goldfish are hardy fish, it could nevertheless impact them. right here is what you do next time you purchase a goldfish. in case you employ faucet water (water out of your sink) you're able to desire to characteristic a chemical suggested as "water conditioner" or "declorinator". they are the comparable subject. you ought to purchase this at a puppy keep. you will upload this each and each time you clean your bowl. ANY time you upload twp water. while cleansing the bowl out, have one greater bowl or cup next to it. Pour 0.5 of the previous water in that tumbler and placed the goldfish in that. Now clean the his bowl with warm water. by no ability use cleansing soap. Fill 0.5 the bowl up with new water and upload the water conditoner. Now pour the goldfish and the previous water returned into the bowl. and you're alll executed! it could desire to look cloudy for about an hour or 2, yet which will pass away presently. additionally godfish choose extra area then maximum individuals think of. So for each inch of a goldfish, he needs 2 gallons. So in case you get a one inch goldfish you opt for a minimum of two gallons for him to stay healthy.

Flushing him down the toilet is pretty cruel to do to a fish if it's alive... It's not gonna put him out of his misery. He'll probably get more injured banging around all those sewage pipes. I know it's sad to watch but I suggest just letting him go naturally. And it makes no sense to take him to a vet... He's probably only, what, worth $4?
