Randy G is correct. dolphins sleep with half their brain at a time, swaping every so often to make sure both sides get rested. this is because breathing for them is like moving an arm for us. they have to be awake and decide to breathe.
recently i read an interesting article about how it is possible that for the first few days neither the dolphin mother nor the new born baby sleep at all. they don't appear to suffer any consequences from this sleep deprivation, either. sleep is different for dolphins.

Only half of a dolphin's brain sleeps at any one time. The other half stays awake so that the dolphin does not drown while sleeping.
