I agree that "AnyDVD" is a great tool to remove the encryption from DVD video so that you can make personal use copies (which is allowed by law) and convert the video to other formats (like DIVX) for use on portable devices. You already bought the movies - you should be able to watch them on your other devices.

Problem is - AnyDVD isn't free. You could search for a gaffed version, but beware - I did this and got a bunch of spyware so I ended up buying it anyway. This program really is worth getting.

For burning the DVDs from the now un-encrypted source DVD, I really like "DVD Shrink" - it will reduce the quality and remove extra features and menus if you "remaster" - there is a temporary directory that will have the video if you want to save it to your laptop as an MPEG2 video file - but those are really large files.

As a final step, take the temp video files from "DVD Shrink" and feed them into "AutoGK" which is a DIVX encoder. You can shrink a movie down to 500MB and still have a good quality (VHS quality) movie that won't use much disk space. You can even play these on many portable media devices like my Archos - Have Fun!
